About Dry Eye
One of the more common problems we diagnose in our patients is Dry Eye.
Dry Eye is more of a layman’s term. The term stands for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction which involves the production and drainage of tears and/or Ocular Surface Disease which focuses on the evaporation of your tears on the surface of your eye.
The severity of symptoms can range from just being a minor annoyance to being very uncomfortable or even painful.
Symptoms of Dry Eye can include:
Gritty Sandy Feeling Wateriness
Brief Shooting Pain
Foreign Body Sensation
Contact Lens Discomfort
Discomfort -Day end, Early Morning, or Night
Factors that can contribute to Dry Eye:
Laser Vision Correction
Contact Lens Use
Computer and Electronic Device Use
Environment (arid climate, office buildings)
The majority of patients with Dry Eye don’t have an issue with making enough tears – they have a problem making good quality tears that stay on the eye long enough to keep them moist and comfortable. Many patients suffer with dry eye symptoms and have been unable to get relief.
The good news is that new treatments are available and after careful evaluation a personalized treatment plan can be created. These treatments include eye lubricants, prescription medications, nutritional supplements, eyelid therapies and more.
